This category includes umbrellas with canopy diameters of 101–123 cm, from roomier everyday models to options with noticeably broader coverage. A large canopy provides better rain coverage for your shoulders, outerwear, bag or backpack.
Which canopy size should you choose?
For everyday use, models closer to the lower end of the range may be enough. If maximum coverage is the priority, look at umbrellas with a canopy of around 120 cm.
The difference between 103 and 120 cm is noticeable: the larger the diameter, the more room you have around your shoulders and belongings.
If you need an umbrella for two people, start with the largest models in the category and check the description of the individual product. Some manufacturers specifically state that the canopy provides enough room for two.
Brands may define a “large canopy” differently, so it is always worth checking the exact diameter in the product specifications.
Large canopies on folding and walking umbrellas
Large canopies are available on both folding umbrellas and walking umbrellas.
With a folding model, check the folded length and weight as well as the canopy diameter. A large canopy does not necessarily mean the umbrella itself will be compact or lightweight. This format is more convenient if you need to carry the umbrella in a bag, backpack or luggage.
A walking umbrella does not fold down in length, so its weight, overall length and handle shape matter more in everyday use. If you often carry the umbrella in your hand, these details are worth considering alongside the canopy size.
With the same canopy diameter, a folding umbrella and a walking umbrella can differ considerably in weight and overall size. A folding model is usually more practical for a bag or backpack. If compact storage is not important, a walking umbrella may be the better format.
What else should you check before buying?
A large canopy is not tied to one opening mechanism. This category includes automatic, semi-automatic and manual umbrellas.
A large diameter alone does not tell you how well an umbrella will handle wind. For windy weather, check the frame and rib materials, the umbrella construction and whether the manufacturer specifies an anti-wind system.
