A flat umbrella is a folding umbrella that looks more like a slim, flattened case than a round tube when folded. This shape makes it easier to carry in a handbag, briefcase or backpack, especially when space is limited. Once opened, it has a regular umbrella canopy – the word "flat" refers only to its folded shape.
Why choose a flat umbrella?
Thanks to its slim profile, a flat umbrella can be placed along the side of a bag, next to documents or inside a narrow backpack compartment. Where a conventional folding umbrella with a rounded shape might feel bulky, a flat model may fit more neatly.
However, a flat umbrella isn't necessarily smaller overall. It may be thinner but wider or longer. If you're choosing an umbrella for a small bag, check all its folded dimensions. If a shorter folded length matters most, take a look at our small umbrellas.
What to look for when choosing
Folded dimensions. Length isn't the only measurement that matters – width and thickness are important too. For example, the Fulton Miniflat-1 measures 22 × 5 × 3 cm when folded. If only the folded length is listed, photos of the closed umbrella can help you get a better idea of its shape.
Canopy diameter. A flat design doesn't necessarily mean a small canopy when open. The Fulton Miniflat-1 has a canopy diameter of 90 cm. Check this measurement separately to get a better idea of how much coverage the umbrella provides in the rain.
Opening mechanism. Flat umbrellas come in manual and automatic versions. An automatic model can be particularly handy when you need to open your umbrella with one hand occupied.
Weight. A flat umbrella isn't necessarily lightweight. The Fulton Miniflat-1, for example, weighs 259 g. If keeping the weight down is your main priority, explore our lightweight umbrellas.
