Check where the lock needs to fit first
A luggage lock is useful only when its shackle or cable passes through the holes in the zip pulls. A rigid metal shackle is compact and moves less, while a flexible cable is easier to thread through thick or offset pulls that do not sit close together. Before ordering, compare the lock and shackle dimensions with the fittings on the particular suitcase, travel bag or backpack.
The lock keeps the zip pulls together, helps prevent accidental opening and makes quick access to the compartment more difficult. It does not reinforce the zip, fabric or shell, however, and cannot make luggage invulnerable. Documents, money and other important belongings are safer in carry-on baggage when transport rules allow.
Combination or key depends on access and routine
A combination lock requires no separate key, which is convenient when several people share the luggage or when you do not want another small item to track. The code should be memorable to its owner without being obvious; keep a copy in a secure note. A keyed lock for a suitcase or bag opens without entering digits, but its spare key should be stored separately from the main one. A two-lock set is practical for two pieces of luggage or several compartments.
Test a new mechanism before packing. Close and open it several times, check that the number wheels align and make sure the key turns without excessive force. Set a combination only according to the instructions for that model, then test it again before attaching the lock to the suitcase.
What the TSA system means
Travel Sentry locks carry a red diamond mark. At airports using the system, authorised screening staff can open and relock the bag with a special tool instead of cutting off the lock. The service keyway on a combination model does not mean that the customer should receive a key. For a keyed lock that the owner opens, check the product page to confirm what is included.
TSA access addresses inspection rather than guaranteeing complete protection from theft or damage. Consider it alongside the locking mechanism and whether the shackle suits your luggage.
Avoid placing unnecessary strain on the zip
Close the zip fully before travelling, join both pulls and check that the lock does not draw them sideways. Position it near the top or side of the bag, away from wheels, the floor and other surfaces. An external pocket can be secured in the same way when its pull shape and openings suit the selected shackle or cable.
Inspect the shackle, cable, number wheels and keys after the journey. If the mechanism jams, do not force it, as this may damage both the lock and the zip pull.
