Transparent umbrellas are chosen for more than just their appearance. The clear canopy lets you see the road and people ahead, so even on deeper models the edge can sit lower without blocking your view. The entire canopy is not always transparent, though: on some models almost the whole surface is clear, while on others a coloured trim or print takes up a noticeable area.
The handle, shaft, ribs and edge details can also be coloured. This means the same category includes both nearly fully transparent umbrellas and models with much more visible decoration.
Transparent canopies can look very different
If visibility is the main reason you want a transparent umbrella, look closely at photos of it fully open. A narrow coloured trim around the edge has little effect on your view, while a large print or wide opaque section covers a much bigger part of the canopy.
The position of the decoration matters as well. A print around the outer edge keeps the centre clear, while details closer to the middle are more likely to sit directly in your line of sight.
Diameter does not tell you how deep the canopy is
Some transparent umbrellas have a canopy that curves noticeably farther down at the sides. Its edge sits lower than on flatter models, while the transparent material still allows you to see ahead.
Diameter tells you how wide the canopy is, but very little about its depth or how low the edge sits. A side-view photo can therefore be more useful than another number in the specifications, as it makes the overall shape much easier to judge.
Walking umbrella or folding umbrella
Many transparent models in the catalogue are walking umbrellas, but a transparent canopy does not determine the construction. A model can be full-length or folding, manual or automatic.
With a walking umbrella, it is worth checking the overall length and weight. If you plan to carry the umbrella in a bag or backpack, the folded dimensions of a compact model become more important.
A manual umbrella opens and closes by hand. On automatic models, some actions are operated by a button, so it is best to check the exact mechanism in the specifications of the individual model.
What to check before buying
First, look at how much of the canopy remains transparent and where the print or trim is positioned. If you prefer a deeper canopy, check the side-view photos as well.
Then look at the construction, mechanism, weight and dimensions. For a walking umbrella, overall length matters; for a folding model, check the closed size and whether a cover is included.
