A folding umbrella is easy to carry with you: once the rain stops, it can go into a bag, backpack or luggage. But even similar-looking models can differ noticeably in size and weight. That is why the number of folds alone tells you little about how convenient an umbrella will be for everyday use.
At Koffer.UA, you will find lightweight compact models for daily carry as well as larger folding umbrellas with roomier canopies. Opening mechanisms also vary, with manual, automatic and semi-automatic options available.
How much space will the umbrella take up in your bag?
Start with the folded length. This is the measurement that tells you whether the umbrella will fit into a small bag, backpack or suitcase compartment.
Two three-fold umbrellas can differ considerably in overall size. If space is limited, the shape also matters: some models have a flatter profile and take up less room in a packed bag.
Weight becomes particularly noticeable when you carry an umbrella every day. In this case, the actual figures are more useful than words such as “lightweight” or “compact” in the product name.
How large will the canopy be?
A small folded size does not necessarily mean a small canopy. Compact umbrellas can vary considerably in diameter once opened.
If a few extra centimetres in your bag are not a problem, you can also consider models with a larger canopy. Folded length and canopy diameter are therefore best checked separately.
How does a folding umbrella open?
A manual umbrella is opened and closed by hand. With a semi-automatic model, a button opens the canopy, while closing is done manually. A fully automatic umbrella uses a button to both open and close the canopy; the telescopic shaft is then pushed down by hand.
The opening mechanism does not determine the size of the umbrella. Both compact and larger models are available with different mechanisms.
What else should you check?
The number of ribs alone does not tell you how well an umbrella will handle windy conditions. The frame materials, joint construction and design of the individual model also matter.
Some folding umbrellas feature a wind-resistant system. If this is important to you, check whether it is listed in the specifications of the model you are considering.
Other features may include UV protection, reflective elements, reverse folding, different handle shapes and a protective cover. These details become more useful once you have found models that already suit you in terms of size and weight.
For a handbag, backpack or car
For a small bag, folded length and weight are usually the main considerations. A backpack or travel bag gives you more room, so a few extra centimetres may matter much less.
If the umbrella will mainly stay in the car, compactness becomes less important. In that case, you can pay more attention to canopy size, opening mechanism and overall construction.
At Koffer.UA, you can choose a folding umbrella by size, weight, mechanism and other features. Delivery is available across Ukraine, with in-store collection from our shops in Kyiv.
