Knirps offers quite a wide range of umbrellas: lightweight models that barely add any weight to a bag, everyday automatic umbrellas, larger canopies and classic stick umbrellas. A model you carry every day and one designed to comfortably cover two people have very different requirements.
The differences are easy to see in the specifications. The lightest umbrellas weigh just over 100 g and fold down to around 21 cm, while larger models can weigh more than half a kilogram. Opening mechanisms vary as well: some models are manual, while others use the Duomatic system.
Knirps also publishes wind-tunnel test results for individual models. These figures are useful when comparing different Knirps umbrellas. Speeds such as 120 or 150 km/h refer to laboratory testing and should not be treated as real-world wind conditions in which an umbrella is meant to be used.
Lightweight or automatic
The US.050 Ultra Light Slim Manual weighs 115 g and folds down to 21 cm. Its canopy measures 90 cm in diameter.
It is the kind of umbrella you can keep in a small bag or backpack every day without really noticing the extra weight. It opens manually, which is worth keeping in mind if you often need to open your umbrella while on the move.
The T.200 Medium Duomatic and A.200 Medium Duomatic are larger and feature an automatic opening and closing mechanism. Both fold down to around 28 cm and have canopies measuring roughly 97–98 cm in diameter.
This is closer to the familiar everyday city umbrella: press a button to open it, then close it just as quickly once the rain stops. The two models are similar in size, but their wind-tunnel results differ: up to 150 km/h for the T.200 and up to 120 km/h for the A.200.
When you need a larger canopy
The A.400 XXL Duomatic has a 126 cm canopy, giving two people enough room to walk under it comfortably without constantly shifting the umbrella from side to side.
Folded, it measures around 38 cm and weighs approximately 510 g. That is quite a lot for a small everyday bag, but the main point of this model is its extra-large canopy.
An umbrella for rain and sun
Knirps also offers Heat Shield models. The U.200 Ultra Light Duomatic Heat Shield uses a coating that absorbs at least 99.95% of UVA and UVB rays and helps reduce heat underneath the canopy.
Its dimensions are still practical for everyday city use: around 27 cm when folded, with a canopy diameter of about 99 cm. This is an umbrella you can carry not only when rain is forecast - it can also be useful on bright summer days.
