On a full automatic umbrella, the button controls both opening and closing the canopy. Once the canopy has folded, the telescopic shaft still needs to be pushed down manually until it locks into place. This mechanism is also known as a full automatic or open-and-close system. On a semi-automatic umbrella, the button only opens the canopy.
This is especially convenient when one hand is occupied, for example when getting into a car or entering a building. After that, the choice comes down to the umbrella itself – its weight, folded length and canopy size.
Compact Umbrella or Larger Canopy
If the umbrella will stay in a small bag every day, start by checking its folded length and weight. For a backpack, car or larger work bag, a few extra centimetres may matter less, leaving more room to choose a model with a wider canopy.
The number of folds does not always tell you how compact an umbrella really is. Two similar models can differ noticeably in folded length, so it is better to check the actual dimensions in the specifications.
A larger canopy covers the shoulders, clothing and bag more effectively, but the umbrella itself is usually bulkier. A compact model is easier to carry every day. Canopy size is therefore worth checking separately – it cannot be judged accurately from the folded length alone.
Weight and Construction
A small umbrella is not necessarily a light one. The mechanism, frame, ribs and other structural parts all affect its overall weight.
A full automatic mechanism also says nothing by itself about wind resistance. The frame and ribs, any wind-resistant construction and manufacturer test results are more useful indicators when such information is available for a specific model.
This deserves extra attention on umbrellas with larger canopies, as stronger gusts place more load on the frame.
Men’s, Women’s or Unisex
The mechanism works the same way on men’s, women’s and unisex automatic umbrellas. The main differences are usually size, weight, handle shape, colour and design.
These categories can help narrow the selection, but the specifications of the individual umbrella are still more important. For a model that will be carried in a bag every day, for example, weight and folded length may matter more than whether it is labelled men’s or women’s.
Some umbrellas also include UV protection, reflective details, a flat profile or reverse-folding construction. These are features of individual models rather than properties of the full automatic mechanism itself.
